MILL CREEK – The Tucker County Football team traveled to Mill Creek to face off against Tygarts Valley
for the opening game of the Football season on Friday September 4th. The Mt. Lions played well early,
but the homestanding Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to take the victory 34-6.
Tygarts Valley won the coin toss to start the game and the Bulldogs deferred their option until the
second half. This gave the Mt. Lions the ball first. Tucker County received the kick and started their
offensive possession on their own 22. The Mt Lions picked up one first down, but the drive stalled
forcing a punt by Tucker County. Tygarts Valley started their first offensive possession at their own 44
yard line. The Bulldogs marched the ball down to Tucker County 30 yard line, but a failed 4th down
conversion would give the Mt. Lions back the ball with 1:00 left in the first quarter.
Tucker County had the ball to start the second quarter. The Mt. Lions moved the ball into Tygarts Valley
territory, but they were unable to convert on 4th down which gave the Bulldogs the ball back. Tygarts
Valley then went to work on offense. The drive for the Bulldogs was a 7 play drive that covered 59 yards
and it was finished off on a 2 yard touchdown run by Daniel White with 9:36 left in the second quarter.
The PAT kick was no good to make the score 6-0 Tygarts Valley. The Mt. Lions turned the ball over on
their next possession with a Trenton Wilfong interception with 6:02 left in the second quarter. Tygarts
Valley took over at the Tucker County 37. The Mt. Lions defense then stepped up as Wesley
Strawderman forced and recovered a fumble to give Tucker County the ball back at their own 7 yard
line. The Mt. Lions moved the ball up to their own 22, but a bad snap caused another Tucker County
turnover with 2:59 left in the second. Tygarts Valley then wasted no time as they needed just 3 plays as
they scored from 12 yards out on a touchdown run by Daniel White. The PAT kick was good to put the
score to 13-0 with 1:27 left in the first half. Tucker County received the kick, but the first half time
expired with the score 13-0 Tygarts Valley.
The Bulldogs received the kick to start the third quarter and Tygarts Valley’s Caden Boggs returned the
kick 77 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was good to make the score 20-0 Bulldogs with
11:46 left in the third quarter. The next two drives for Tucker County resulted in a punt. Tygarts Valley
also was forced to punt on their first offensive possession of the third quarter. The Bulldogs offense got
going on their second drive of the third as they marched the ball 6 plays for 61 yards. The drive was
capped off with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Josh Bright to Jace Swecker. This score came with 43
seconds left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was good to push the Bulldog lead to 27-0.
The Mt. Lions got the ball in the fourth and their offense started to gain some momentum. Tucker
County marched the ball into Tygarts Valley territory. The Mt. Lions then capped off the 12 play 73 yard
drive when Trenton Wilfong connected with Maddox Anderson on a 40 yard touchdown pass. The 2
point conversion failed to make the score 27-6 Tygarts Valley. The Bulldogs would then answer on their
next drive as Bright connected with Swecker again on a 13 yard touchdown pass with 4:04 left in the
game. The PAT kick was good which would end the scoring to make the final score 34-6 Tygarts Valley.
Tucker County was led by Trenton Wilfong with 15 carries and 43 yards rushing. Wilfong also was 5 of
11 passing with 70 yards. Maddox Anderson collected 2 receptions for 42 yards receiving and Jeremy
Liller added 11 carries for 34 yards rushing for the Mt. Lions. Tygarts Valley outgained the Mt. Lions on
the night 308 to 158 in total yards.
Tucker County(0-1) will host Pocahontas County on Friday September 11th, kickoff is set for 7pm. The
