ACCIDENT, MD – The Tucker County Football team traveled to Northern Garrett for a road game against the Huskies last Friday September 9th. Tucker County trailed by just 6 points at the half, but Northern outscored the Mt. Lions 21-6 in the second half to get the victory over Tucker County 33-14.
Northern got the ball to start the game as Tucker County won the toss and deferred their option until the second half. The Huskies drove the ball down to the Tucker County 20 yard line, but a fumble with 10:24 left in the first quarter was recovered by the Mt. Lions Dillon Swartz to give the ball to Tucker County at their own 22 yard line. The Mt. Lions picked up a first down, but they fumbled the ball back to Northern with 8:49 left in the first at the Tucker County 38. The Huskies then scored 3 plays later on a 19 yard touchdown run. The PAT was no good to make the score 6-0 Northern with 7:42 left in the first quarter. Tucker County could not get their offense moving and had to punt on their next two possessions. Northern then got the ball back toward the end of the first quarter and they took advantage. The Huskies went 55 yards on 3 plays that was capped by a 7 yard touchdown run with 1:40 left in the first. The PAT failed to put the Huskies up 12-0 after one quarter of play.
Tucker County would dominate the second quarter as their offense moved the ball, but they was unable to get into the end zone after their first two drives of the quarter. The Mt. Lions defense held the Huskies offense in the quarter also as Northern failed to score in the second. Tucker County then got on the scoreboard at the end of the half as Luke Poling connected with Jameson Hardy as time expired from 38 yards out. The ball was tipped by a Northern defender into the hands of Hardy with 0 time left in the second quarter. The PAT failed for the Mt. Lions to make the halftime score 12-6 Northern.
Tucker County received the third quarter kick and the ball was ripped out of the Tucker County runner with him clearly down, but the officials let the fumble stand to give the Huskies the ball. Northern would then extend their lead with 2:59 left in the third quarter on a 19 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was good to up the Northern lead to 19-6. The Mt. Lions then put together a good drive, but they were unable to sustain the drive as they gave the ball back to the Huskies after a failed fourth down play. Northern then needed just 2 plays to march 43 yards as they would strike again on a 12 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was good to make the score 26-6 with 9:51 left in the fourth quarter.
The Mt. Lions then put together another good drive and with 3:58 left in the game Poling connected with Cole Rapp on a 4 yard touchdown pass. The PAT was good as Poling connected with Will Callaway on a pass to make the score 26-14. Northern then answered right back after they recovered the Mt. Lions onside kick. Northern would go 60 yards on a 3 play drive that was finished off with a 7 yard touchdown run with 3:14 left in the game. The PAT kick was good to put Northern up in the contest 33-14. Tucker County then turned the ball over again on their next possession and the Huskies ran out the clock to pick up the win 33-14.
Luke Poling led Tucker County with 22 carries for 87 yards rushing and Poling added 10 of 19 passing for 104 yards. Jameson Hardy added 5 receptions for 55 yards receiving. Cayleb Broadwater led Northern with 135 yards rushing. The Huskies outgained Tucker County in total offense 272-226.
