GLENVILLE – The Tucker County Football team traveled to Glenville State College to face Gilmer County on Friday October 25th. The Mt. Lions moved the ball on offense all night, but they ran out of time to complete the comeback as they fell in the contest 42-32.
Gilmer County got the ball to start the game as they received the opening kick. The Tucker County defense would then force a turnover as the Titans fumbled the ball and Tucker County recovered at the Gilmer County 42 yard line. The Mt. Lions then drove the ball down inside the Titans 10 yard line, but Tucker County was backed up by penalties that forced a failed fourth down on the 9th play of the drive. This then gave the ball back to the home team and the Gilmer County offense started the drive at their own 14. The Titans then got a big play 3 plays later on an 89 yard touchdown pass. The 2 point conversion was good to make the score 8-0 Gilmer County early in the first quarter. Tucker County then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and the Titans recovered the ball at the Mt. Lions 39. Gilmer County capitalized on the turnover 6 plays later with a 17 yard touchdown pass and the PAT kick was no good to push the Titans lead to 14-0. Tucker County got the ball in great field position on the next kickoff at their own 48 yard line. The first quarter then ended with the score remaining 14-0 Gilmer County.
Tucker County continued to drive in the second quarter as they took the ball down to the Titans 29. The Mt. Lions were then faced with a fourth down play and the ball was intercepted in the endzone to give Gilmer County the ball at their own 20. The homestanding Titans wasted no time as they scored on a 75 yard touchdown pass to make the score 21-0 Gilmer County after the successful PAT kick. The Mt. Lions offense then got the ball back after the kickoff at their own 44. Tucker County put together a 12 play 56 yard drive that was capped off with a 1 yard touchdown run by Liam Hood on a quarterback sneak. The 2 point conversion was good by Tucker County to put the score to 21-8 Gilmer County. The Mt. Lions then recovered an onside kick attempt at the Gilmer County 46 yard line. The Tucker County offense drove the ball to the Titans 20, but the Mt. Lions drive stopped on a failed fourth down play. The Titans then only needed 1 play as they scored on an 80 yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was good to make the score 28-8 at the halftime intermission.
The Mt. Lions received the kick to start the third quarter and the drive started at their own 40. Tucker County could not maintain the drive as they turned the ball over on downs to the Titans at the Gilmer County 40 yard line. A bad snap by Gilmer County on a punt gave the Mt. Lions the ball at the Titans 29. Tucker County then capitalized on the field position as they scored on a 1 yard touchdown run by Liam Hood. The 2 point conversion failed to cut the Gilmer County lead to 28-14. The home team would answer with a 9 play 65 yard drive that was finished off on a 1 yard touchdown run by the Titans. The PAT kick was good to up the Gilmer County advantage to 35-14 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with the score the same 35-14 Titans.
The fourth quarter started with the Tucker County offense still on the field driving. The Mt. Lions then capped off the drive with a 6 yard touchdown pass from Liam Hood to Trenton Wilfong. The conversion failed to make the score 35-20 Gilmer County. The Titans recovered an attempted onside kick from Tucker County at midfield. Gilmer County then scored 5 plays later on a 41 yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick was good to give Gilmer County the 42-20 lead. Tucker County would add a score on a 9 yard touchdown pass from Hood to William McCallister to make the score 42-26 Gilmer County. The Mt. Lions then recovered an onside kick at the Titans 46. Tucker County then scored 4 plays later on a Liam Hood touchdown pass to Trenton Wilfong from 24 yards out. The conversion was no good to cut the Gilmer County lead to 42-32. The Titans would then recover the onside kick, but Gilmer County fumbled the ball back to the Mt. Lions during the return. Tucker County was unable to complete the comeback as time ran out to end the game with a Gilmer County win by the final score of 42-32
