MOOREFIELD – The Tucker County Boys’ Basketball team traveled to Moorefield on March 12th to play the Yellowjackets for a chance to advance to the State Tournament next week in Charleston. The Mt. Lions used a strong third quarter to pull away from Moorefield and held off the home team for the 62-53 win to advance to the State Tournament for the 14th consecutive year.
The first quarter was very close as both teams exchanged baskets and Tucker County held a slim lead after one 10-6. In the second quarter both teams played even and the defense for both teams stepped up. The Mt. Lions and Yellowjackets scored 13 points each in the second quarter to make the score 23-19 at the half.
Tucker County then pulled away in the third quarter as the visiting team outpaced Moorefield 19-11 in the third to lead by 12 after the third 42-30. Moorefield did not go away as they fought back in the fourth quarter and outscored the Mt. Lions 23-20. The lead for Tucker County got down to 4 points in the final quarter, but the Yellowjackets were unable to complete the comeback as the Mt. Lions took home the Regional Final win 62-53.
Derek Zirk led the Mt. Lions with 17 points, 10 rebounds and Seth Evans had 16 points, 11 rebounds. Ethan Crosten finished with 14 points, 3 steals and Landon Dillard added 9 points, 2 assists. Mikhail Lewis dished out 3 assists in the game for Tucker County.
The #7 Mt. Lions(18-6) will face #2 Greater Beckley Christian on Wednesday March 18th at 1pm in the WV State Tournament in Charleston, WV. The winner of this game will face the #3 Magnolia / #6 Notre Dame Winner in the Semi-Finals on Friday at 9:30am. The Class “A” Championship game will be played at 12 noon on Saturday March 21st.
