PARSONS – The Mt. Lions Football team played host to Pocahontas County for the first home game of the season on Friday September 11th. Tucker County held a slim 6-3 lead in the second quarter, but the visiting Warriors dominated the second to win by the final score of 36-6.
Pocahontas County won the coin toss and received the opening kick. The Warriors offense moved the ball down inside Tucker County territory, but the Mt. Lions defense stopped Pocahontas County on a third down play. The Warriors Jacob Davis then connected on a 39 yard field goal with 9:23 left in the first quarter to make the score 3-0 Pocahontas County. Both teams struggled to move the ball the rest of the first quarter and the first ended with the score the same 3-0 Warriors.
Tucker County then got on the scoreboard in the second quarter as they capped off a 11 play 55 yard drive on a pass play. Trenton Wilfong connected with Jeremy Liller in the back of the endzone on a beautiful catch from 13 yards out. The 2 point conversion failed to make the score 6-3 Tucker County with 8:55 left in the second quarter. Pocahontas County would then answer on their next drive as they scored on a Haiden Gladwell 9 yard touchdown run with 5:28 left in the second. The PAT attempt was no good to give the Warriors back the lead 9-6. The Mt. Lions went 3 plays and had to punt on their next possession. Pocahontas County then put together another scoring drive to increase their lead. The drive was finished off with a Keaton Baldwin 4 yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left in the first half. The PAT kick was good to make the score 15-6 Warriors. Tucker County then would turn the ball over to Pocahontas County on a Wilfong fumble which gave the visitors the ball at the Mt. Lions 22 yard line. The Warriors wasted no time as they scored 2 plays later on a Baldwin 20 yard touchdown run with 2 seconds left in the second quarter. The PAT kick was good to make the halftime score 22-6
The third quarter started with Tucker County on offense. The Mt. Lions could not move the ball and they had to punt the ball back to Pocahontas County. The Warriors also struggled on offense as they had to punt the ball away. Another punt by Tucker County on their next possession gave Pocahontas County the ball at their own 26 yard line. The Warriors then put together an impressive 8 play 74 yard drive that was capped off on a 17 yard touchdown run by Baldwin with 21 seconds left in the third. The PAT kick was good to make the score 29-6 Pocahontas County.
In the fourth quarter Pocahontas County would end the scoring for the night as they got a 24 yard touchdown run by Baldwin with 5:07 left in the game. The extra point kick was good to make the final score of the game 36-6 Warriors.
Trenton Wilfong led Tucker County 5 of 14 passing for 55 yards and Jeremy Liller added 2 catches for 32 yards receiving. Ashton Lycliter had 2 receptions for 17 yards and Maddox Anderson chipped in with 2 catches for 13 yards. Pocahontas County outgained the Mt. Lions in total offense 372-93.
