MOOREFIELD – The Mt. Lions traveled to Moorefield on March 12th to take on the Yellowjackets for a chance to advance to the State Tournament. Tucker County used a strong fourth quarter to surge past Moorefield to pick up the 43-30 win.
Both teams came out with strong defense, but the offense struggled as Moorefield led by one after the first quarter 9-8. The Mt. Lions then turned up the defense another notch to hold the Yellowjackets scoreless in the second quarter to lead at the half 13-9.
Tucker County and Moorefield started to find their offense in the third as the Mt. Lions scored 11 points in the quarter and Moorefield scored 12 points to give Tucker County the slim lead after three 24-21. In the fourth quarter Tucker County pulled away and made their foul shots down the stretch as they outscored the host 19-9 to get the Regional Championship win 43-30. The win will send Tucker County to the State Tournament in Charleston, WV for the 13th straight year and the 20th time overall.
Mitchell Mason led the Mt. Lions with 16 points and Austin Zirk added 9 points for Tucker County in the win.
Tucker County(17-6) earned the #7 seed and will face off against #2 Notre Dame on Thursday at 1pm at the Charleston Civic Center. This will be the 4th time these teams have faced off and the last 2 games were classic games that were decided by just 2 points. Notre Dame has defeated the Mt. Lions 2 times and Tucker County won over the Irish once at home on Feb 24th. The winner of this game will face the #3 Charleston Catholic / #6 Valley Fayette winner on Friday at 11:15am.
