BERKELEY SPRINGS – The Mt. Lions Football team made the long trip to Berkeley Springs on Friday September 24th. The game was a battle back and forth throughout the contest with Berkeley Springs pulling away late in the game for the 31-28 victory.
The Indians got the ball to start the game and their drive ended with a missed field goal from 30 yards out. The Mt. Lions were forced to punt on their first possession and the first quarter ended with the game still scoreless 0-0. Berkeley Springs then got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter with a 3 yard touchdown run on a 4th down play. The extra point kick was good to give the Indians a 7-0 lead with 11:39 left in the second quarter. Tucker County then put together a good drive down to the Berkeley Springs 16 yard line. A failed 4th down gave the ball back to the Indians. Neither team could get points the rest of the first half and the halftime score remained 7-0 Indians.
Tucker County received the third quarter kick and their offense went to work. The Mt. Lions would score on a 10 yard touchdown run by Jared Reall with 8:00 left in the third. The 2 point conversion was good to give Tucker County the 8-7 lead. Berkeley Springs then answered back with a 17 yard touchdown pass with 5:49 left in the third. The 2 point conversion was good to give the Indians the 15-8 lead. The Mt. Lions wasted no time to battle back as Trenton Wilfong received the short kick and raced 58 yards for the touchdown. The PAT conversion was good to give Tucker County the lead again 16-15 with 5:41 left in the third quarter. The Indians offense then would score again on a 26 yard touchdown pass with 1:59 left in the action packed third quarter. The PAT was good to make the score 23-16 Indians at the end of the third. The Mt. Lions would answer in the fourth quarter on a 5 yard touchdown run by Ethan Rosenau. The PAT conversion failed to keep Berkeley Springs in the lead 23-22 with 8:40 left in the game. The home standing Indians would get another score with 6:27 left in the fourth on a 15 yard touchdown run. The important 2 point conversion was good to give Berkeley Springs a 2 score lead at 31-22. The Mt. Lions offense then drove the ball down the field and they capped off the drive on a 4 yard touchdown run by Jared Reall with 2:37 left in the game. The 2 point conversion failed to make the score 31-28 Indians. Berkeley Springs then recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to hold on for the 31-28 victory over Tucker County.
Ethan Rosenau led Tucker County with 13 of 23 passing for 152 yards and Jared Reall led the Mt. Lions in rushing with 11 carries and 56 yards. Trenton Wilfong led the Mt. Lions receiving with 6 catches for 68 yards and JJ Knotts added 3 receptions for 41 yards. Wesley Strawderman also had 1 catch for 31 yards and Jakob Barrett added 1 catch for 24 yards. JJ Knotts led the Mt. Lions defense with 9 tackles. Jared Reall and Jakob Barrett added 4 tackles each for Tucker County in the loss.
