DUNMORE – The Mt. Lions traveled to Pocahontas County for their first game of the season on Friday August 30th. Tucker County struggled to slow down the Warriors offense and the Mt. Lions fell in the contest by the final score of 54-6.
Pocahontas County received the opening kick and went right to work. The home standing Warriors went 9 plays that covered 55 yards. The drive was capped off on a 3 yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0 after the PAT kick. Tucker County received the kickoff and took over on their own 27 yard line. The Mt. Lions struggled to move the ball on offense as they had to punt the ball back to Pocahontas County after just 3 plays. The Warriors put their offense back onto the field with great field position at their own 40 yard line. Pocahontas County then would score 5 plays later on a 15 yard touchdown run, and the PAT kick was good to push the Warriors lead to 14-0. Tucker County moved the ball on their next drive as they drove the ball deep into Pocahontas County territory as the first quarter expired.
The Tucker County drive would stall in the second quarter after a failed fourth down play on an incomplete pass at the Warriors 23 yard line. The home team then went to work again on offense. Pocahontas County marched 76 yards on 12 plays to score on a 1 yard touchdown run to make the score 21-0. The next Mt. Lions possession would not go well as a Liam Hood pass went through the hands of Logan Husk and into the hands of a Pocahontas County defender. The Warriors player then returned the interception 27 yards for the touchdown to make the score 27-0 Pocahontas County. Tucker County moved the ball on their next possession, but a Mt. Lions fumble gave the Warriors the ball back at the Tucker County 47 yard line. The Warriors added another score after a 7 play 47 yard drive that was capped off on a 3 yard run to push the score to 34-0 Pocahontas County. The turnover bug would bite Tucker County again as they fumbled the ball on their first offensive play and Pocahontas County recovered at the Tucker County 19 yard line. Then 3 plays later the Warriors scored on a 16 yard touchdown run right before halftime to make the score at the half 41-0 Pocahontas County.
The Mt. Lions received the kick to start the third quarter, but another Tucker County turnover gave the home Warriors the ball back. Both teams then exchanged punts and the third quarter ended with the score remaining 41-0.
In the fourth quarter Pocahontas County capped off an 11 play drive with a 2 yard touchdown run to make the score 48-0. The Mt. Lions then put together a positive drive that was highlighted a 30 yard pass play from Liam Hood to Hunter Collar and then Hood connected with Jeremy Liller for a 25 yard touchdown pass to get the Mt. Lions on the scoreboard. The 2 point conversion failed to put the score at 48-6. Tucker County recovered the onside kick, but the Mt. Lions could not sustain the drive giving the Warriors the ball at the Tucker County 38 yard line. Pocahontas County ended the scoring for the night on a 35 yard touchdown run late in the contest. The final score showed Pocahontas County winning the contest by the final score of 54-6.
