CLARKSBURG – The Lady Mt. Lions opened the season at Notre Dame on Thursday December 6th. Tucker County trailed by 5 points at the half, but a big third quarter by the Lady Irish lifted the home team to a 59-40 victory.
Tucker County got off to a slow start as Notre Dame raced out to a 7-0 lead early. The Lady Mt. Lions then responded as they scored 7 straight points to tie the game. Tucker County continued to find their offense as they led after one quarter of play 17-14. Tucker County built a lead in the second, but late in the quarter Notre Dame chipped away at the lead. The Lady Irish then made a run and surged ahead to take a 28-23 lead into the locker room at the half.
The third quarter belonged to Notre Dame as they picked up where they left off before the half as they outscored the Lady Mt. Lions 18-7 in the third and the home team led 46-30 after three. The fourth quarter showed a little life for Tucker County, but the Lady Mt. Lions could get the Notre Dame lead below 13 the rest of the contest. Notre Dame picked up the win by the final score of 59-40.
Riley Evans led Tucker County in scoring with 9 points and Katie Surguy added 8 points in the loss. Aliyah Plum finished with 12 rebounds and McKinley Murphy added 4 assists for the Lady Mt. Lions
HAMBLETON – Tucker County hosted Charleston Catholic on Saturday December 8th. The Lady Mt. Lions outpaced the Lady Irish 32-3 in the second half to blow the game open to pick up a 58-14 win at home.
Tucker County struggled early as they led after one quarter of play 12-7. The Lady Mt. Lions pulled away more in the second quarter with a 14-4 scoring advantage to make the halftime score 26-11 Tucker County.
In the third quarter the Lady Mt. Lions turned up the intensity as they outscored Charleston Catholic 15-3 to push the advantage to 41-14 after three quarters. Tucker County then held the Lady Irish scoreless in the fourth quarter to make the final score 58-14 Tucker County.
Jayden Kuhn led the Lady Mt. Lions in scoring off the bench with 12 points and Katie Surguy chipped in 11 points. Aliyah Plum and Kelcee James led Tucker County with 9 rebounds each. London Hood added 4 steals and McKinley Murphy dished out 4 assists in the win for the Lady Mt. Lions.
Tucker County will travel to Glenville State College tonight December 12th for a first round game in the IOGA Classic against Nicholas County at 5:30pm. The winner will play in the Championship game on Saturday December 15th against the Braxton County / Clay County winner. The losing teams will play Friday evening December 14th in a Consolation game at 5pm. All games will be played at the Waco Center on the campus of Glenville State College.
