MARTINSBURG – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to “AAA” Martinsburg on Saturday December 9th for a JV / Varsity contests against the Lady Bulldogs. The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team held off a late charge from Martinsburg to pick up the road win by the final score of 40-36.
Tucker County and Martinsburg traded baskets throughout the first quarter. The visiting Lady Mt. Lions took the advantage after one quarter on play 9-5. In the second quarter Tucker County locked down on defense as they pushed the lead to as high as a 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs scored 4 straight points at the end of the second to make the score 21-10 Tucker County at the half.
The third quarter would display the home team chipping away at the Tucker County lead as they outpaced the Lady Mt. Lions 14-10 to cut the Tucker County lead to 31-24 after three quarters. In the final quarter Martinsburg fought their way back to tie the game, but the Lady Mt. Lions held off the late surge to pick up the tough road win 40-36.
Tucker County’s Sydney Nestor led all scorers with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals. Sydney Moore added 9 points for the Lady Mt. Lions and Terra Kuhn chipped in with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals for Tucker County in the win. Martinsburg was led by Morganne Andrews with 9 points. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team picked up the win as well 33-30.
Tucker County(2-0) was scheduled to play at Glenville State College on December 11th at 4pm. The Lady Mt. Lions will then face either Gilmer County or RCB. If Tucker County wins on December 11th then they will play in the Championship game on Saturday December 16th at 12 noon at Glenville State College. If the Lady Mt. Lions fall on December 11th then they will play in the Consolation game on Thursday December 14th at 5pm at Glenville State College.
