HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions Basketball team started the season with a home game against Tygarts Valley on December 1st. Tucker County got off to a slow start, but the homestanding Lady Mt. Lions pulled away for the 67-36 win.
The first quarter was low scoring as both teams struggled to score as the Lady Bulldogs were more aggressive to get the lead after one quarter 11-8. Tucker County then turned up the defense and the offense got going to outscore Tygarts Valley 18-4 in the second to make the halftime score 26-15 Lady Mt. Lions.
The third quarter was also controlled by Tucker County as they outshot the Lady Bulldogs 19-8 to push the Lady Mt. Lions lead up to 45-23. Tygarts Valley could not mount a comeback as Tucker County continued to pull away in the fourth as they outpaced the visitors 22-13 in the final quarter. This would give the Lady Mt. Lions the victory by the final score of 67-36.
Tucker County used balance scoring in the win as Raven Matthews ended the game with 14 points and Macy Helmick added 13 points. Ericka Zirk and Avery Colebank added 10 points each for the Lady Mt. Lions. Zirk led the team in rebounding with 11 boards, while Matthews pulled down 8 rebounds and collected 6 steals. Helmick dished out 7 assists and collected 6 rebounds. Brylee Wetzel and Makenna Evans chipped in with 5 points each in the Tucker County win. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team also got the win by the score of 46-7.
Tucker County(1-0) will return to action on Friday at home against East Hardy for a varsity only contest that will start at 6pm. For more info go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
