TUCKER COUNTY GIRLS’ WIN 2 GAMES AND DROP 1 GAME IN BUSY WEEK

GASSAWAY – The Lady Mt. Lions Basketball team traveled to Braxton County on Tuesday January 23rd.  Tucker County dominated from start to finish to gather a road victory over the Lady Eagles by the final score of 62-20.

The first quarter belonged to the visiting Lady Mt. Lions as they outshot Braxton County 16-5 in the first quarter to build a lead.  Tucker County continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as they outscored the Lady Eagles 11-5 to push the score to 27-10 Tucker County at the halftime break.

The Lady Mt. Lions defense was the story in the third quarter as they held Braxton County to just 4 points in the period and Tucker County scored 15 points in the third to make the score 42-14 Lady Mt. Lions.  In the fourth quarter Tucker County scored 20 points while holding the homestanding Lady Eagles to 6 points to make the final score of the game 62-20 Tucker County.

Raven Matthews led Tucker County with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 blocks.  Brylee Wetzel and Addie Hicks added 6 points each, while Macy Helmick chipped in with 6 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists in the Lady Mt. Lions win.  The Tucker County JV team also got the win 64-15.

 

MILL CREEK – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team stayed on the road for a game at Tygarts Valley on Thursday January 25th.  The Lady Mt. Lions surged to a 10 point lead after one quarter and then Tucker County ran away from the Lady Bulldogs for a 81-25 road victory.

The visiting Lady Mt. Lions came out strong in the first quarter as they built a 17-7 lead after one quarter of play.  In the second quarter Tucker County outscored the Lady Bulldogs 22-9 to push the score to 39-16 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Lady Mt. Lions exploded for 26 points and held Tygarts Valley to 5 points to expand the lead to 65-21 for Tucker County after three quarters.  The Lady Mt. Lions would have a great fourth quarter as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-4 to make the final score of the game 81-25 Tucker County.

The Lady Mt. Lions were led by Macy Helmick with 17 points, 6 assists and Katie Hicks had 13 points, 8 rebounds.  Raven Matthews added 10 points, 12 rebounds, 5 steals and Addie Hicks reached double figures with 10 points in the win for Tucker County.  The Lady Mt. Lions JV team picked up the win in the first game 56-11.

 

HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions Basketball team played host to #2 Gilmer County on Saturday January 27th.  The Lady Titans built a big lead in the third.  Tucker County fought back to get within 3 points late in the contest, but the comeback fell short for the Lady Mt. Lions as they fell in the contest 50-44.

Gilmer County started the game hot as they scored 13 points and held Tucker County to 4 points to lead 13-4 after one quarter of play.  The Lady Mt. Lions fought back in the second quarter as they edged the Lady Titans in scoring 9-8 in the period to make the score 21-13 Gilmer County at the halftime break.

The visiting Lady Titans controlled the third quarter as they outshot Tucker County 19-12 in the third to make the score 40-25 before the fourth quarter started.  The Lady Mt. Lions did not give up as they fought back with pressure defense to get the score closer.  Tucker County got the score within 3 points at 47-44 with a three point basket by Addie Hicks with 39 seconds left in the game.  The Lady Mt. Lions 19-10 scoring advantage in the fourth was not enough as Gilmer County made their foul shots to hold off the Tucker County comeback to get the road win by the score of 50-44.

Tucker County was led in scoring by Ericka Zirk with 16 points, 9 rebounds and Raven Matthews added 6 points, 18 rebounds.  Brylee Wetzel had 6 points and Addie Hicks added 5 points in the loss for the Lady Mt. Lions.  The Tucker County JV team got the win 45-13.

 

Tucker County(10-4) will return to action on Thursday February 1st against Elkins at home with JV action starting at 5:45pm.  The Lady Mt. Lions will then travel to Petersburg on Saturday February 3rd and then they will travel to Grafton on Monday February 5th.  Both games will start with JV action starting at 6pm.
