HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions used a big second quarter to surge to a 36-17 halftime lead and never looked back winning 66-39 to capture their 10th straight Regional Championship and a berth into the State Tournament in Charleston.
The game started with both teams answering each other as they battled through the first quarter with Tucker County leading after one 18-11. In the second quarter the Lady Mt. Lions put some distance between them and the visiting Lady Wildcats as Tucker County outscored Pendleton County 18-6 in the second quarter to take a 36-17 lead in the half.
The Lady Wildcats came out poised in the third quarter and made a little run at the deficit, but Tucker County responded to close out the third strong to add to the lead after three 54-30. In the final quarter the Lady Mt. Lions sealed the victory outpacing Pendleton County 12-9 in the fourth to pick up the Regional Championship victory 66-39.
Bekah Simmons led Tucker County with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and Stephanie Betler followed with 20 points, 4 assists, 4 steals. Mariah Bowley added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals for the Lady Mt. Lions. This will be the 10th straight State Tournament appearance by the Tucker County Girls Basketball team and the 21st appearance overall.
Tucker County received the #3 seed in the WV Girls State Tournament and will play Pocahontas County tomorrow morning at 9:30am at the Charleston Civic Center. The winner of that game will play on Friday at 11:15am against the St. Marys / Fayetteville winner. The Class “A” Championship game is scheduled for 2:30pm on Saturday.
