Which is going to happen first, am I going to go crazy or deaf? It has been 17 years since the cicadas have been here and you forget in that time just how noisy the darn things are. It is hard to believe that something that small can make that much noise. Momma Said, “OMG. Just make it stop!”
I was sitting on the deck the other night and the sound was oppressive. I started to think about all the cultures that eat bugs like grasshoppers. A little chocolate sauce, and once you get past the legs, they wouldn’t be too bad. Throw a few on the barbeque and have a bug roast. Momma Said, “Maybe they could be incorporated into the smores, who knows.”
I guess everything has a purpose, but I have yet to find out what these bugs are good for. If you could catch enough of them, I guess you could smush them up and use as fertilizer on the garden; feed them to the chickens; squish them up and use them as glue Momma Said, “Have you ever had one hit your windshield? You can’t clean it off.”
I would think that the birds would be as big as turkeys if they could eat their fill of these noisy things. I am not sure how long they survive, but I hope they do their thing and just disappear. Maybe the next time they surface, I will be so old I won’t be able to hear them. I guess that is one thing to look forward to in my old age.
I won’t leave you with a recipe for Crispy Cicada, but I hope you like this one just the same.
Chocolate Toffee No Bake Cookies
Ingredients
3 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup toffee bits, plus more for sprinkling
2 tablespoons softened unsalted butter
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Directions
Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Combine the oats, peanut butter, bitter and semisweet chocolate chips, toffee bits, butter and salt in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the chocolate chips melt, 3 to 5 minutes.
Scoop heaping tablespoons of batter onto the baking sheet and sprinkle each cookie with extra toffee bits. Freeze for 15 minutes before serving. The cookies can be stored in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for 1 week.
