ELKINS – The Wildcats trailed 6-0 with 5:30 left to play in the game, but Elkins scored twice in the last 5 minutes to get the win over Tucker Valley 20-0 last Wednesday Oct 2nd.
The Hornets got the ball first to start the game. Elkins however turned the ball over to Tucker Valley when the Wildcats recovered the ball at their 45 yard line. The Tucker Valley offense moved the ball down to the Elkins 8 yard line, but had to give the ball back to Elkins after a failed 4th down play. From the 8 yard line the Hornets drove the ball all the way down the field and scored on an 18 yard touchdown run by Dalton Taylor with 7:53 left in the second quarter. The extra point kick failed to make the score 6-0 Elkins.
An 8 play drive by Tucker Valley on their next possession stalled on a failed 4th down play at the Hornets 36 yard line. Elkins fumbled the ball again 4 plays later and the Wildcats recovered on the Hornets 38 yard line. Tucker Valley would then loose the ball 3 plays later on a fumble and Elkins recovered to put their offense back on the field. The Elkins offense then went to work before halftime and drove the ball down to the Tucker Valley 1 yard line. The Wildcat defense then stepped up to keep the Hornets out of the end zone as time expired before Elkins could score. The halftime score remained 6-0 Elkins.
In the third quarter Tucker Valley started their drive on the 20 yard line and took the ball down to the Elkins 28 before the drive was stopped after unsuccessful 4th down conversion. The Hornets then put their offense to work as they marched down the field on a 72 yard drive. Then after 12 plays Elkins scored on a 1 yard touchdown run by George Triplett with 5:04 left in the game. The 2 point conversion was good to up the Elkins lead to 14-0.
Tucker Valley then was forced to pass the ball down 2 scores with 5 minutes left in the game. A face mask penalty by Elkins gave the Wildcats a 1st down at their 34 yard line. Then 2 plays later a Luke Poling pass was intercepted and returned 53 yards for a touchdown by Beau Bright. The extra point kick was no good to put the score to 20-0 Elkins with 3:14 left in the game. Tucker Valley was unable to sustain their next drive and Elkins ran out the clock to get the hard fought win 20-0.
Luke Poling finished 7 of 9 passing for 75 yards for Tucker Valley and Poling also had 14 carries for 39 yards rushing. Dalton Taylor led Elkins with 91 yards rushing on 14 carries.
