(Moorefield, WV) – Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College (Eastern) will host a three class Mental Health Symposium that covers a broad and timely slate of topics in the coming months, led by a team of experts in their respective fields. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available to students who take the classes, which are also open to the interested public. The registration fee for all three programs is $175, with reduced costs for individual classes. All three classes will be held on the Eastern campus in Moorefield.
The first program in the symposium is scheduled on Monday, August 21, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will address the topic of “Addiction & Recovery in a discussion led by Raj Masih, talk radio host and director of the Potomac Highlands Guild’s anti-stigma program. Masih opened the first substance abuse clinic in Petersburg and speaks extensively on the topic of prescription drug addiction.
“West Virginia has the unfortunate designation as the state with the highest overdose mortality rate in the nation,” said Eastern President Dr. Chuck Terrell. “Eastern is committed to being a part of the solution to this complex problem, and educating our students and community about ways to identify it, and the resources available, is an excellent starting point.”
Next up in the series is a discussion by Dr. Tom Stein, Ed.D., a psychologist who will discuss Responding to Military Veterans: Injuries to the Mind on Friday, August 25, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The workshop will focus on ways to assist West Virginia veterans that may have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and who may still be experiencing some adverse impacts fro their military service. Signs and symptoms of TBI include difficulty organizing daily tasks, mood changes, and lack of motivation, exhaustion, and sensitivity to sound, light, or distractions.
The series wraps up on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 with a course from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. conducted by Diana Ketterman Thorne, a program specialist for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Mental Health Certified Instructor, educator, author and speaker. This groundbreaking course on Mental Health First Aid will provide participants with the tools to identify persons who might be struggling with a mental health or substance use problem, and to connect them with the appropriate support and resources.
