BAKER – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to East Hardy on Wednesday January 24th to face their PVC Conference foe in a varsity only contest. The Lady Mt. Lions jumped out to a big lead after one quarter and never looked back in route to an impressive 73-29 victory.
Tucker County jumped up early on the Lady Cougars as they led after one quarter 21-7. The second quarter showcased the Lady Mt. Lions defense once again as they out hustled the home standing East Hardy 22-6 in the second to make the halftime score 43-13 Tucker County.
The third quarter looked a lot like the first two quarter as the Lady Mt. Lion outscored the Lady Cougars 18-8 to make the Tucker County lead 61-21 after three quarters. Tucker County outpaced East Hardy 12-8 in the final stanza to take home the road PVC Conference victory 73-29.
Sydney Nestor led Tucker County with 17 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and Sydney Moore added 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists. Terra Kuhn had 10 points for the Lady Mt. Lions and Cecily Strawderman chipped in with 8 points. Dominique Meadows led Tucker County in rebounding with 6 boards.
CLARKSBURG – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to Notre Dame on Friday January 26th for a varsity only contest. Tucker County used a big first quarter and a good defensive performance in the second half to pick up a 53-28 win.
Tucker County got the scoring going early as they used they outshot the Lady Irish in the first quarter to take a 19-5 lead after one quarter. Notre Dame would strike back in the second quarter as they outscored the visiting Lady Mt. Lions 12-6 to cut the Tucker County lead to 25-17 at the halftime intermission.
The third quarter would belong to Tucker County as they outscored the Lady Irish 14-9 to make the score 39-26 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter the lockdown defense from the Lady Mt. Lions was on true display as the held Notre Dame to just 2 points and scored 14 to pull away and take the road victory by the final score of 53-28.
Sydney Nestor led Tucker County with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals and Terra Kuhn added 10 points. Dominique Meadows had 8 points, 6 rebounds and Sydney Moore collected 5 rebounds, 3 steals in the Lady Mt. Lions victory.
HAMBLETON – Tucker County finished out the week with a Saturday afternoon game on January 27th against Charleston Catholic. The Lady Mt. Lions came out focused and got the home victory by the final score of 61-28.
Tucker County established the tone early as they outscored the Lady Irish to lead 21-7 after one quarter of play. The second quarter went well also for Tucker County as they outshot the visitors 21-6 to push their lead up to 42-13 at the half.
The scoring slowed in the third quarter as the Lady Mt. Lions edged Charleston Catholic 6-5 in the period to make te score 48-18 after three quarters. Tucker County then won the fourth quarter 13-10 and the contest by the final score of 61-28 Tucker County.
Late in the first quarter of this contest Sydney Nestor scored her 6th point of the game and that was enough to surpass Stephanie Shine and become the Girls’ All-Time Scoring Leader at Tucker County High School. Nestor passed Shine’s 1,517 point total to take over the top position. The point record had been held by Shine since 1991. The game was stopped to honor Nestor with a poster and the game ball.
Sydney Nestor led the Lady Mt. Lions in the game with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and Terra Kuhn added 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals. McKinley Murphy chipped in with 7 points and Dominique Meadows collected 6 boards for Tucker County in the win.
