Tucker County Holds Progressive Ag. Safety Day

Many in agriculture know someone whose life has been affected by a farm-related injury or death. The statistics are sobering. Even more tragic is that these incidents could have been prevented with a few simple safety precautions. That’s why the Progressive Agriculture Foundation® is on a crusade to bring safety and health information to the farming communities who desperately need it.

At the heart of this effort is the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® program. This educational program provides training and resources for local communities to conduct one-day safety and health programs. Safety Days are designed to be age-appropriate, hands-on, fun, and safe for children.

Progressive Agriculture Safety Days are conducted in the United States, Canada and the U.S. Territories. In addition, the program is licensed in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

The mission of the Progressive Agriculture Safety Days is simple – to provide education, training and resources to make farm, ranch and rural life safer and healthier for children and their communities.

This year Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School and Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School participated in the Progressive Ag. Safety Day. One hundred and twenty students rotated through various stations set up by different community members and groups. Students participated in lawn mower safety taught by Digger Burns, Sunscreen Safety taught by the St. George Medical Clinic, First Aide taught by the Tucker County Health Department, Animal Safety taught by the Animal Shelter, Tobacco Prevention taught by Preston Taylor Clinic, Equipment Safety taught by the Tygrat’s Valley Soil Conservation District, Gun Safety taught by Rob Porter, Food Safety taught by Karen Bright, Rethink your Drink taught by Barb Wolfe, Disability Awareness taught by Inetta Fluharty, and EMS shared emergency procedures with the students.

This program was sponsored by the Tucker County Farm Bureau, the WVU Tucker County Extension Office and the Tucker County FFA students served as group leaders.
