Annual Windfest, Mountaineer Days Offer Family-Fun June 29-July 1

DAVIS, W.Va.  – For decades folks have gathered in the mountains of West Virginia to celebrate the wind, music, and Appalachian heritage. The weekend leading up to July 4 is packed with several must-attend family-friendly activities.


Celebrate the wind in West Virginia’s Canaan Valley during Windfest on June 29-July 1. Enjoy jumbo kite demonstrations, workshops, hikes, wagon rides, star gazing and more throughout the weekend.

After a thrilling time at Windfest, hop over to Thomas, W.Va. and enjoy Mountaineer DaysThis event also takes place June 29-July 1 and has delighted attendees for more than 40 years. Events include a cake walk, patriotic bicycle decorating contest, firemen’s water battle, parade, crafts and a variety of music and dancing. You’ll also love all that Thomas has to offer by way of history, shops, and restaurants. The weekend wouldn’t be complete without fireworks! Bring a lawn chair and your camera and join us in downtown Thomas on June 30 for the fireworks show beginning after 8:30 p.m.

On July 2, the Tucker County Alpine Festival presents Celebration of the Arts, with a free afternoon concert featuring The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Gates open at 3 p.m. Concert begins at 5 p.m. Food and beverages will be available on site.

If you want to extend your holiday activities in the area, check-out Canaan Valley Resort’sEdible Plants Hike on July 7. Join the Canaan Valley Resort park naturalist for a moderate two hour instructional hike were you will explore the local habitat to find plants that can help keep you alive. Learn which trees and plants are best for food, fire, shelter, baskets, or rope. You will be taught and practice the Plant Edibility Test to keep yourself safe. Cost is $39 for ages 12 and older; Children age 12 – under are free with accompanying adult. Bring water, snacks, rain wear, suitable outdoor clothes and hiking boots or shoes suggested. Hike will be conducted rain or shine.
