VERL ARTHUR “NUBBY” DAVIS, age 84 years, a resident of Parsons, WV departed this life Friday afternoon, March 8, 2019 at Cortland Acres at Thomas, WV, surrounded by his loving family. He had been in declining health for the past year.
He was born Monday, August 27, 1934 at Tucker County, a son of the late George Guy and Mary Long Davis. On December 11, 1954, he was married to the former Elsie Marie Reed, who survives. They celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.
Also left to cherish Verl’s memory are one son, Verl Junior “V.J.” Davis and wife Angie of Hambleton; two daughters, Barbara Kay Dearborn and husband Calvin of Harman and Kathy Llynn Hovatter and husband Rick of Bull Run; seven grandchildren, RJ Hovatter and wife Mindy of Mannington, Nick Hovatter and wife Solena of Hendricks, Travis Veal and companion Emily Quinton of Knoxville, TN, Chris Veal and fiancée Katie Baldwin of Morgantown, Luke, Cassidy and Trevin Davis of Hambleton; and eight great grandchildren, Branson, Kaden, Brock, Rhys, Gage and Quinn Hovatter, Coy and Eloise Veal and another great-grandson due in August; one nephew, Arthur “Punk” Davis, one niece, Vickie Hedrick; a son-in-law, Junior Hershman of VA; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He is the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Jeanette Hershman; and one brother, Junior Davis and wife Eva.
He attended Parsons High School, where he lettered in football and baseball. He was an employee of the former Parsons Tannery, was a coal miner at Laurel Run and retired from Consol. He was a member of the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department for sixty-five years, joining at the age of sixteen and he had kept very active. He was the longest member and the oldest member of the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the United Mine Workers for twenty-five years and a member of the local Moose Lodge. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his family. He was an avid Tucker County Mt. Lions and WVU Mountaineer fan. For several years, he was a referee for the local high school basketball teams.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dave Snyder officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for VERL ARTHUR “NUBBY” DAVIS.
