Five Rivers Public Library’s summer reading program was June 5, 12 and 19. This year’s theme was “A Universe of Stories”. Books were read to the children weekly and this year it was all about the universe, stars and planets.
The crafts, games, snacks & activities were geared towards the theme of the Summer Reading Program. Kids created space headbands, made a paper towel rocket, among other crafts. Photos were taken of the kids and Angie created a photo inside an astronaut frame for each kid to take home. They played lots of games along with learning to moon walk with buckets. Donna Helmick and Eileen Poling read to the kids and Eileen had a great presentation dealing with space. Dennis Filler Board President brought his telescope and taught the kids how to use it. He told them about space and how gravity worked.
All children received goodie bags, with the top three readers receiving a special tote filled with a variety of items. Our top three readers were, Rhys and Gage Hovatter, tied for third place were Quinn Hovatter, Zodi and Abbie.
Throughout the 3 weeks the kids were given a variety of snacks to choose from which also coordinated with the theme each week. Of the reading lists that were turned in, 465 books were read for the 3 weeks of the program. To encourage the kids to read, there were several businesses who contributed certificates to the reading program. McDonalds, C.J.’s Pizzeria, The Dugout, Parsons Pizza and Subway. We appreciate the businesses for their support! We also appreciate all the parents, grandparents, etc. who brought the children to our program! The kids had a great time as did the volunteers and library staff!
