Tucker County High School HSTA Program
By: Tessa Jolly
Tucker County High School has programs to help students prepare for college, and one of the major programs is HSTA or Health Sciences and Technology Academy. HSTA is based out of WVU and was established in 1994.
HSTA provides students exposure to science and medical opportunities for learning. HSTA students are primarily students who will be first-generation college students and who are from rural communities. On average, HSTA students will earn $30,000 per year more than their parents. Since 1998, 2,879 high school students have graduated from HSTA, and most students who were in the program work in WV after graduating from college.
Statistics show that HSTA students perform better than average in college. The program also waives all or a proportion of college tuition, which helps students greatly. Required activities for students in the HSTA program include attending meetings, which occur every week or two, and presenting science projects in May during the HSTA Symposium. Students spend the first half of the school year preparing their projects for this symposium. HSTA students also attend different summer camps.
There are seventeen students involved in the Tucker County High School HSTA program. Teacher Chris Wilson is the advisor for the Tucker County High School’s HSTA program.
