Barbara Ellen Anderson, 89, of Thomas, WV, passed away on December 20, 2022. She was born in Antioch, British Columbia Canada, and is the daughter of the late Jack and Doris (Greenwood) MacConnachie.

Barbara obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut and her master’s degree in Education from WVU. She taught 2nd grade and Kindergarten for the Tucker County Board of Education. Later, she was employed as a Lead Teacher for the Department of Education serving in the Department of Corrections institutions, including the Davis Center, Huttonsville, Pruntytown, and Salem Industrial Home for Youth where she retired.

She is survived by two sons, Jonathan and wife Melissa (McBee) of Fairmont and Matthew and partner Judit Haverty of Thomas; a grandson, Zakary Anderson of Fairmont; and a brother, John MacConnachie of Victoria, B.C.

Barbara enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with life-long friends while living in Grafton. Some of these friends even showed up at 3am one morning dressed in fancy clothes to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate and toast the new bride and groom. She made many friends while traveling around the world and always made sure to go on one big trip each year. Her laughter was infectious, and she always looked forward to the next adventure – especially if it included a beach.

In recent years, she could be found walking her dog “Stitch” in the Thomas City Park; browsing in a gallery – she supported the Arts wherever she lived and visited; or attending a book club meeting at Cortland Acres, which satisfied her love of books.

Barbara’s wishes to be cremated will be honored. No services are scheduled at this time. The Hinkle-Fenner Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Anderson family.
