Tucker County’s high school baseball team had three games this past week, one of which gave the young Mt. Lions squad their first win of the season. Tucker started the week off with a matchup against the Pendleton County Wildcats. Tucker managed just nine at-bats in the bout, coming away with no hits, which resulted in a loss at a final score of 16-0.

Tucker would then take on the Paw Paw Pirates at home in what was a close battle throughout. Tucker’s bats were much more active in this one, totaling 17 hits. Senior Josh Crossland was perfect, going 4-4 with three singles and a triple. Evan Witt collected two singles and a double, with Owen Bolyard, Zane Carr, and Parker Newman all notching two singles apiece.

The game was back and forth throughout, and with the game tied in the bottom of the final inning with runners on base, Evan “Walk-Off” Witt singled, scoring the game-winning run, 12-11, and securing the first win of the season for the Mt. Lions.

Pitcher Owen Helmick picked up the win for Tucker, with Bolyard earning the save.

The Mt. Lions would then take on the Tygarts Valley Bulldogs to wrap up the week. The bats cooled back off in Mill Creek as Tucker found hits on just four of their 15 at-bats. Josh Moore, Colton Teter, Newman, and Helmick all collected a single.

Tucker fell to a final score of 22-3. TC will return to action on Monday, the 13th, as they will again face the Wildcats of Pendleton County.
