ELKINS, W.Va. – Twelve nurses from Davis Medical Center’s Family Birthing Center and Women’s HealthCare have earned national certification in various specialties relating to the care of mothers and their newborns.
“Our nurses are demonstrating their commitment to a higher level of patient care,” said Peggy Thorne-Church, RNC-OB, clinical manager of the Davis Medical Center Family Birthing Center. “Patients can be assured that our nursing staff is qualified and knowledgeable about current care standards and practices.”
While nurses are licensed by state, the National Certification Corporation (NCC) issues nationally recognized certifications. The NCC is a not-for-profit organization that provides a national credentialing program for nurses, physicians and other licensed health care professionals. Certification is awarded to nurses in the obstetric, gynecologic, and neonatal nursing specialties and certificates of added qualification are awarded to licensed health care professionals in the subspecialty areas of electronic fetal monitoring and neonatal pediatric transport.
“Generally healthcare institutions are fortunate to have several members of their staff with specialty training,” Thorne-Church said. “For DMC to have twelve certified nurses is outstanding. It’s an added convenience for patients not to have travel outside the area for this same level of higher-quality maternity care which is available from the beginning of a pregnancy through delivery.”
Thorne-Church, RNC-OB, who is certified, recognized 12 nurses who have completed the rigorous national examination for certification in Inpatient Obstetrics (RNC-OB): Those receiving the certification were Cindy Marsh, Sherry Jones, Shalane WetzeI, Cindy Nestor, Teri Sandridge, Jackie Hall, Mina Cashman, Ciera James, Becky White, Mary Jo Hoyle, Shirley Daniels and Julie Phillips.
Additionally four nurses also have certification in Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) through the (NCC), they are: Teri Sandridge, Jackie Hall, Mina Cashman and Mary Jo Hoyle.
Julie Phillips, BSN, RNC-OB, ICCE, received additional certification in childbirth education through the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA).
