A rollicking good time is on tap October 11 in the Augusta Pavilion with a square dance featuring live music by The Sweetback Sisters with special guest Honey Spine. The Sweetback Sisters, Emily Miller and Zara Bode, combine classic country, swing, honky tonk and old-time music for a unique take on American roots music. Honey Spine is comprised of Brian Chieco on banjo, ukulele and vocals, and Tim Martin on guitar and vocals. The progressive folk duo balances upbeat music with heavy or dark lyricism, pointing out humans’ dualistic nature. A dance workshop begins at 7:30 p.m. and the square dance follows at 8 p.m.
During Homecoming Weekend, October 18-19, Davis & Elkins College presents Bob Barnett, author of Hillside Fields: A History of Sports in West Virginia and former professor of sport history at Marshall University. The work chronicles the famous athletic triumphs and heart-breaking losses of local heroes and legendary teams, recording the titanic struggles of a small state competing alongside larger rivals. Barnett’s lecture is free. The time and location will be announced soon.

Also during Homecoming Weekend, contemporary Christian rock band Switchfoot will bring its music and new film “Fading West” to Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. The concert, scheduled for October 19 at 7:30 p.m., is presented by the Davis & Elkins College Campus Activities Board and Elkins Air1.

For two weekends in October, the Davis & Elkins College Department of Fine & Performing Arts will present the stage production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” in the Boiler House Theatre. The shows will take place at 8 p.m. on October 25, 26 and 31 and November 1 and 2.

Comedy Caravan will perform at 10 p.m. October 26 at The Icehouse. The free performance is presented by Davis & Elkins College Student Life and Campus Activities Board.
Also in October, the Davis & Elkins College Writers Series hosts author Maggie Anderson. Presented by the Davis & Elkins College Department of English and Communication, a poetry writing workshop is scheduled for October 29 from 4-5:30 p.m., while a poetry reading and book signing are set for October 30 from 7-8 p.m. All events are free and will take place in Booth Library Community Room.
