The Blue Star Memorial Marker on Route 72 North in Parsons has received a much-needed beautification makeover, thanks to the combined efforts of the Mountaineer Garden Club (MGC), community volunteers, the Tucker County Commission, and the City of Parsons.

The National Garden Clubs, Inc. Blue Star Memorial Program honors the men and women who have served, are currently serving, or will serve in the United States Armed Forces. The Mountaineer Garden Club originally dedicated this marker on June 12, 2021, as a lasting tribute to our military personnel and their sacrifices.

Unfortunately, last year a falling tree branch toppled the marker. The City of Parsons made the necessary repairs, restoring the sign to its previous placement. However, landscaping was still needed to enhance the area and draw attention to this meaningful memorial.

Mountaineer Garden Club members Crystal Nelson, Faith Moore, and Club President Bonnie Smith met with Tucker County Commissioner Mike Rosenaur to discuss funding for the landscaping project. A grant was secured to purchase supplies for a raised garden bed in the shape of a five-pointed star surrounding the marker. Although the grant covered materials, additional help was needed to complete the project.

Crystal Nelson reached out to David Simmons, who generously volunteered his stone-laying expertise and services. Crystal’s father, Gary Nestor, also joined the effort to help bring the project to completion.

The MGC work crew included Crystal Nelson, project committee chair, who coordinated the many details involved in securing supplies and working with everyone involved. As West Virginia Garden Club, Inc. (WVGCI) Blue Star Chair, Faith Moore also brought her dedication to the Blue Star Memorial Program to this important community project. Helping hands Linda Sherman and Sandra Hockman provided additional support.

The City of Parsons also played an important role in the project. City Manager Mike Simmons coordinated city workers to repair the marker and generously provided soil to fill the new garden bed.

Through this wonderful community partnership, the Blue Star Memorial Marker has been transformed into an attractive and meaningful tribute to the brave men and women who serve our nation. Their dedication and generosity have helped ensure that this memorial will continue to honor our Armed Forces for years to come.
