Runners can race through the heart of the Potomac Highlands at the 7th Annual Canaan Valley Half Marathon, 10k and 5k, held April 26 and 27 at Canaan Valley State Park. Those looking for more competition can take on the 5th Annual Parsons VFD Cheat River Triathlon on May 17, starting at Mill Race Park in Parsons. The course includes a three-mile kayak or canoe segment, followed by a seven-mile bike ride. A 2k walk and 5k run are also available. Proceeds benefit the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department.

The Appalachian Fly Fishing Festival returns from May 31 through June 1 in Thomas, featuring educational workshops, casting demonstrations and a chance to meet others in the fly fishing community.
Live music is part of the season with the Mountainside Music Series at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. Free outdoor concerts will happen every Friday evening from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, starting with the Sour Mash String Band on May 23 at 6 p.m.
ArtSpring will also take place over Memorial Day weekend, bringing gallery walks, art exhibits, artisan markets, live music and family-friendly activities to Thomas, Davis, Canaan Valley and Parsons. The three-day event includes a parade and special events throughout the county.
