In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating Thursday, May 15 as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week. President Clinton directed that the Flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff on all Government Buildings on May 15.
There are more than 836,787 sworn Law Enforcement Officers now serving in the United States. Each year, there are more than 33 millions crimes committed in the US, an average of one crime every two seconds.
In 2013, 105 Police Officers gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. So far in 2014, 31 Officers have been killed. On average, a Law Enforcement Officer is killed every 58 hours.
We honor these Officers every day but during this week, we ask everyone to tie a Blue Ribbon on the antenna of your vehicle to show your respect and support to those officers that have given it all. Also, to the officer that is there everyday, giving you your freedom, protecting your life and property and in doing so, knowing that one day, it may be one of them that gives that ultimate sacrifice for you.
