Elkins, WV – Garrett Butler, MD, Davis Medical Center physician, was recently recognized by the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine for his outstanding guidance and mentoring of medical students.
“Dr. Butler has gone above and beyond for our class. For every patient, he goes over labs, what we should expect to see, and how we should expect to see cases presented on boards. He has given us so much advice on what to expect in residency and as an attending. He truly emulates what it means to be a caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable physician,” said one student who nominated Butler.
WVSOM annually presents two Outstanding Preceptors Awards in each statewide campus region. One goes to a primary care physician and one to a non-primary care specialist. The students in each region nominate preceptors for the awards. Davis Medical Center’s region, the Central East, includes the central part of WV from Elkins and Buckhannon to Weston, Bridgeport, and Morgantown.
Butler and other DMC physicians serve as a preceptors for the program providing guidance to WVSOM medical students in their third- and fourth-year clinical rotations at the Elkins facility.
The Outstanding Preceptor Awards are presented to physicians who exhibit professionalism and demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring. These health professionals also demonstrate a commitment to community wellness and service.
Butler joined the medical staff and team of hospitalists at DMC in 2017. He sees patients in a family practice setting at Buckhannon Medical Care and Broaddus Hospital.
He earned his medical degree from WVU School of Medicine in 2014. In addition to his medical degree, Butler holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., and a Bachelor of Science Degree in biology from Towson University in Towson, Md. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, National Rural Health Association, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and West Virginia Board of Medicine: WV #26718.
