ELKINS, WV – February is American Heart Month, a time when many efforts are focused on spreading awareness about the nation’s number one killer, cardiovascular disease.  The Community Blood and Health Screening sponsored by Davis Medical Center (DMC) and The Rotary Club of Elkins is a good opportunity to learn more about your personal health.

The event is Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, from 7 – 10 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Elkins, WV.

“It’s important to understand if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or diabetes,” explained DMC Director of Population Health Tiffany Auvil, LPN.  “The multi-phasic blood test and screenings for cardiac health, pulmonary function, sleep apnea, and diabetes will be available during the better health event.  These basic screenings can identify serious health issues, and help provide a roadmap to interventions or lifestyle changes to improved health.”

The multi-phasic blood panel will be offered at a discounted price of $35.  It includes CBC, comprehensive metabolic panel, lipid panel and uric acid.  Other tests available at discounted prices include thyroid (TSH) and thyroid profile, PSA (prostate), testosterone, 25-hydroxy Vitamin D, HbA1c (diabetes), C-Reactive Protein (CRP) , Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), and Vitamin B12, folate.

Pre-registration for the multi-phasic screen is not required however individuals should fast for 12 hours before getting blood tests to ensure the most accurate results. Payment may be made at the time of the test by check, credit card or cash.

Free screenings include diabetes (blood glucose), blood pressure, pulse oxygen, and assessments for sleep apnea, balance, cardiac disease and pulmonary disease. Community organizations expected to participate include Youth Health Service, Coordinated Council for Independent Living, and the Literacy Volunteers of Randolph County.

The event is free to the public (charges apply to some screenings) and walk-ins are welcome. For more information or to make an appointment for the blood screenings, call 304.637.3270.
