Since 2006, approximately 150 people have taken WV Master Naturalist classes in Canaan Valley, and more recently in Elkins. The WV Master Naturalist program is similar to the WV Master Gardener program with a different emphasis.
The WV Master Naturalist program is a program of the WV Division of Natural Resources who provide some of the instructors of the program. To become a certified WV Master Naturalist, you must complete 64 hours of instruction and do 30 hours of nature related volunteer work. In Canaan Valley, students have requested classes compressed into four weekends; the Elkins chapter offers two classes on one Saturday each month.
Many of the Canaan chapter students are second home owners in the area and find the compressed schedule workable. Classes include Wildflowers, Amphibians and Reptiles, Trees, Insects, Ecology, Wetland, Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitats among many others. The classes are a great way to get to know people with similar interests and to learn about the natural world around us. Students have up to four years to complete classes and volunteer work.
To become certified, students must also complete 30 hours of nature related volunteer work. This can involve opportunities at the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the Mon National Forest, a state park (Canaan Resort and Blackwater Falls are close), working with children, etc. Students have done a variety of activities including: bluebird box monitoring, doing beaver, butterfly, moth, salamander and vernal pool surveys, monitoring Nature Conservancy properties such as Cranesville Swamp and Thunderstruck (and others), water monitoring, creating a native garden, leading walks and programs for adults and children on a wide variety of topics including identification of wildflowers, trees, animal tracks and signs, birds, etc., developing brochures, education materials, leading storytime, leading nature programs for scouts or schools and many others. What wonderful things to do in this beautiful area.
Many students say the classes are a great way to learn about the area and the opportunities for service and nature activities.
