Members of the Mountaineer Garden Club in Parsons met with Commissioner Mike Rosenau on Friday, June 5th to sign a Proclamation designating the week of June 7-13 as National Garden Week. This week will be celebrated by National Garden Clubs throughout our Nation, State and County. The Mountaineer Garden Club does much to beautify Parsons by planting a tree in or near Parsons each Arbor Day, picking up trash from Parsons to Hendricks on the Allegheny Highlands Trail in early spring, planting and maintaining over 40 plant boxes downtown and in the parks, planting flowers and shrubbery at the Blue Star Memorial (which they had constructed) on the wall entering Parsons from north on 72, and making seasonal centerpieces to display in our 2 local banks for Christmas and Easter. Other activities the club does to help our community include making Valentines for all the residents in Cortland Acres, sponsoring several 4-H students to enable them to attend 4-H camp at no cost, designating 2 homes and one business each month from April to October as Yard of the Month, and decorating a tree for PRO’s Festival of Trees for Christmas. New members are always welcome and needed! Meetings are typically held the first Tuesday of each month except for January and July, at 6pm at 5 Rivers Library, except on special occasions. For information on meetings please call Bonnie Smith, President, at 304-642-8773 or Faith Moore, Tygart Valley District Director, at 304-476-2095.
