At approximately 7:40 p.m. on January 7, fire companies from Canaan Valley, Davis, Thomas, and Harman were dispatched for a structure fire involving one of the Pedestal Homes at Black Bear Resort in Canaan Valley. The home was unoccupied at the time.

Photo by Robert Marias Fire engines had just arrived, attack lines had been pulled, and the fire fighters started flowing water moments after this photo.

First arriving fire crews found the structure well involved, and immediately began suppression efforts to knock down the fire and protect the adjacent homes on either side. The fire was controlled within 40 minutes and crews then began overhaul operations to find and extinguish hot spots. Operations were hindered by structural instability caused by the fire and concluded at approximately 9:45 p.m.

On January 8 at 6:05 a.m. crews from Canaan Valley and Davis were again dispatched for a rekindle of the home. Due to structural instability and the elevation of the rekindled areas, Canaan Valley VFD requested support from Parsons VFD and their aerial ladder truck. Parsons VFD was able to safely access the affected areas and extinguish the rekindled fire.

Due to heavy fire damage and safety concerns, the cause of the fire could not be determined.
