The Tucker County Board of Education appointed Tracy Teets as the Board Treasurer during the August 20 meeting. According to state statute 18-9-6, each county board of education must appoint a treasurer by recommendation from the superintendent. Teets currently works as the treasurer for the school system.
At the meeting, Tucker County High School Principal Steven Cosner addressed the board to discuss unexcused absences. “I’d like to take away some of the privileges they have once they reach that 10 threshold,” Cosner said. He reported last year there were 44 students with 10 or more absences.
The board approved the purchase of a 2020 Blue Bird 77 passenger, special needs school bus for $108,951. “We do get state money to purchase a school bus, so that’s where that money comes from,” Board President Tim Turner said.
The board approved the use of one bus and driver by the Tucker County Fair Board and West Virginia University Extension Service on August 22 for transportation of all the third grade students in the county to the Tucker County Fair at Camp Kidd.
Six student transfers from neighboring counties into Tucker County school system were approved. Four notifications of intent to homeschool were approved.
The board hired Matthew Lawrence as a social studies teacher at Tucker Valley. Lawrence is a state certified teacher. Nathaniel Goldstein was hired as a special education interventionist itinerant at Davis Thomas.
Ricky Ridgeway declined the offer as a special education itinerant at Tucker Valley, leaving that position vacant at the school.
Superintendent Alicia Lambert requested board approval of the removal of employee Laura Olsen from her custodian position at Davis Thomas. Joseph Meloy was hired as Olsen’s replacement.
Evelyn Cassidy resigned from her substitute aide position. She will continue working as a substitute secretary. Jamie Nestor will also work as a substitute secretary as well as a substitute aide.
Judy Pitzer resigned as the girls basketball coach at Davis Thomas.
The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 4 at the board office at 4:30 p.m.
