Tucker County Energy Express Needs You

The Energy Express summer reading program will be returning to Tucker County this summer after a four year absence.

We will be offering two sites this year, one at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School and the second at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School. The sites will run concurrently, beginning June 12 and will continue for eight weeks. We are in need of site supervisors and reading mentors for both sites, so please consider applying if you are interested in helping children retain reading skills during the summer months.

Energy Express, a nationally acclaimed AmeriCorps summer literacy and nutrition program, offers services to approximately 3,000 children living in low-income and rural communities throughout West Virginia.

Energy Express promotes children’s school success by providing summer learning experiences focused on reading and nutritious meals served family-style.

The program depends on the hard work and dedication of education professionals who serve as site supervisors. Site supervisors are viewed as the heart of the program by mentoring, training, and supervising a small team of highly motivated AmeriCorps members serving as mentors and community coordinators. College student mentors create an enriching environment focused on reading, writing and art – making learning exciting for a small group of school-aged children, while community coordinators recruit, train and supervise parent and community volunteers to read with the children while helping to support daily activities.

Energy Express site supervisor responsibilities include overall management of a six-week summer learning program for children entering first through sixth grades including supervising AmeriCorps members in meeting program objectives, overseeing use of the facility, connecting with families and the community, adhering to the program model and program policies and using technology for communication and the submission of data.

Qualifications for Site Supervisor include a bachelor’s degree awarded prior to June 12, 2014 or a combination of education and experience ( High School diploma or GED and four years of related experience or Associate Degree and two years of full-time directly related experience.) No professional contract that overlaps June 12-August 1. Reading mentor positions through Americorp will be awarded to college students or those entering college. These positions receive an $1850 living allowance, as well as a $1175 education award.

A complete position description and application can be obtained from the Energy Express website www.energyexpress.wvu.edu. Selection process has begun and will continue until positions are filled.

More information also is available by calling Energy Express at West Virginia University at 304-293-3855, the Tucker County Extension Service at ( 304-478-2949 x. 209) or sending an email to energy.express@mail.wvu.edu.
