A large crowd of UMWA Locals 2410 and 1289 members and families and supporters attended the annual picnic at Mill Race Park, in Parsons, Aug. 29. There were so many in attendance, multiple photos had to be taken! A good time was had by all. UMWA Local 2410 represented miners at the Dobbin Mine, also known as the Dobbin Alpine Mine, near the border of Tucker and Grant Counties.
Local 2410 members set a world record for longwall mining on April 4, 1984, by pulling 21,951 tons of coal in a 24-hour shift.
UMWA Local 1289 is based in Elk Garden (Mineral County/Grant County region) and represented miners for the North Branch Coal Company, Droppleman and Brother Coal Company and other area coal operations from the mid-20th century through the 1990s. Photos by Janet Stemple of Preston County.
