Representatives from American Fidelity were on hand at the regular Tucker County Board of Education meeting, recently at the Davis Thomas Elementary School library.  They do business with 32 different school districts in West Virginia.  Their supplemental plan does not replace the PEIA program but will enhance it.  One of the attractive benefits being offered is ìflexible spendingî and another would be that it is payroll deductible.  This offer will be put on a future board agenda for approval before making it available to teachers and staff.

Discussion was held on the approved Chinese language teacher that would work among the three schools in the county.  Dr. Campbell said,  “We are presently securing housing in the Parsons area for this teacher.    This teacher is being paid through a grant; so basically, we are getting a free teacher.  We only have to pay  for housing and transportation.”

Alicia Lambert, principal at Davis/Thomas, said  “They plan to use this teacher for an elementary route.  Traditionally, language classes are made available to 7th and 8th grades, but we feel that exposing the younger students would be more beneficial.”

After a short executive session, it was decided that no action would be taken on the third and final reading of the policy update and it would be put on the agenda for the next board meeting.

Campbell recommended approval of the following personnel actions:

Campbell addressed the ì
‘chatter and mis-informationî’ that has been circulating.  He indicated there had been some questions about the number of school days for students and staff.  “The students have gone to school 180 days, the staff has worked 200 days.  We have checked this out thoroughly.”  He also added, “All students, K – 11 Grade, are required to attend school through  June 11.  Only seniors are through for the year.  This is a state law.”
