PARSONS – The Tucker County Board of Education met in a work session recently and then in regular session.

The meeting convened with the call to order and Pledge of Allegiance with all members present.

Having no delegations pertaining to agenda items and following a minor agenda adjustment, the board proceeded to consent items.

The board approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the vendor accounts. The board held back for further consideration item C. of consent items- Agreement for Collection Services.

The board held discussion and had questions for Jonathan Hicks regarding the agreement between Transworld Systems, Inc. and Tucker County Schools for services on past due accounts. Currently the school has around 45 accounts which are outstanding in amounts over $200. The school system is currently owed around $14,000 in outstanding accounts. The board asked for a clarified contract from Transworld before endorsing the agreement.

The board moved into information reports. It was stated during the transportation report that the new bus may arrive in October. During the board committee reports several members reported on a recent weekend conference attended. A matter of concern during the recent conference is that there is a push to remove administrative responsibilities from local school boards and give them to area RESA’s. The motivation is to allow local boards to focus on educational responsibilities. However, concern by smaller school boards is that this may negate the need for local boards and hence the area residents governing themselves. This would also cost local school board jobs and offer less flexibility. Board and staff members agreed that this “push” bears watching by all small school boards. Board member Turner reported briefly on House Bill 2940 which would allow sharing of services between area school boards.

Having no delegations pertaining to non-agenda items, the board went into executive session to discuss personnel and disciplinary action. The board returned from executive session with no action taken.

The board approved the following personnel recommendations:

Employment:

Kim Falls- Homebound Teacher, County-wide as needed.

Elizabeth Roberts- Substitute teacher, 2014-15 school year.

Josie Ball- Bus operator, run 6-A

Angela Nestor- Ticket taker, County-wide, as needed.

Amy Moore- Ticket taker, County-wide, as needed.

Resignation:

Carolyn Gray- Cook, TVEMS, effective immediately.

Lucinda Nestor- Substitute cook, effective immediately.

James Duckworth- Substitute cook, effective immediately.

Having no further business, the board adjourned. The next meeting of the Tucker County School Board will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014, 4:30 p.m. at the board office annex. For more information call 304-478-2771.
