An out of state guest at Timberline Resort lost their life Wednesday, March 12th as the result of a suspected medical emergency, according to Tucker County Sheriff Jake Kopek. “It was a middle aged man, out of state,” Kopek said.
The man is suspected of experiencing a medical emergency that caused him to strike a tree on the slopes, Kopek said. According to Kopek, the victim died at the scene. “Right now it is unclear as to what happened,” Kopek said. “It appears there was a medical emergency and he struck a tree on the slopes and he perished there.”
Timberline Mountain released a statement on Facebook about the incident March 12th. In their statement, Timberline wrote, “We are heartbroken to share the news of a fatality of a guest while skiing at Timberline Mountain on Wednesday, March 12th. We want to express our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy.”
Timberline also thanked first responders for their assistance during the emergency. “We are immensely grateful to our ski patrol, staff, and local first responders for their swift and professional efforts. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this devastating event,” Timberline wrote.
Timberline also said that they are committed to the safety and well-being of their guests, but had no other details to share.
The Tucker County Sheriff’s Department is conducting a death investigation into the incident. “Tucker County Sheriff’s Department is investigating,” Kopek said. “There is currently a death investigation going on as to the circumstances.”
