Grab the kids, grabs your bikes and put on your hiking shoes! Mill Race Park will be buzzing with people on the move this Saturday from 8:30 to noon as bikers and hikers hit the trail for fun, exercise and prizes! June 4 is National Trails Day and PRO ON TRAC is celebrating by hosting a trail event for all ages, highlighting our beautiful Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail. This is not a race but participants are encouraged to walk, run or ride a bike as far as they feel comfortable. Certificates will be awarded for various distances covered. Prizes will also be handed out to ALL children who register and participate in ANY way; Tricycles included!
Registration at the park will begin at 8:30am on June 4 and go until 10 a.m. Hiking and Biking will begin at 9a.m. with a final end time of noon. Entry fee is $5 for ages 11and over and $3 for ages 10 and under. Thanks to the following sponsors, healthy snacks and water will be provided FREE of charge by McDonalds, Dollar General, Shop-N-Save and Family Dollar. Additional food will be available for purchase. Any proceeds from the event will benefit PRO ON TRAC’s efforts to revitalize downtown Parsons.
Raffle tickets will be on sale for an adult bike donated by Joey’s Bike Shop in Elkins to be raffled off by the Highlands Trail Foundation during the Blackwater Canyon Ride in September. PRO will also be selling tickets at the Bike and Hike for several items being raffled off on July 4 (an election basket and a gift basket) for .50 each and 2 works of art by local artist, Kelly Cain (a painted saw featuring an eagle and a painted cupboard door of a rooster) for $1 each, drawing to be held Aug. 19 at the Davisson’s concert.
West Va. State Highway Department was mowing grass along the trail last week, which helps to make the trail picture perfect and safe! Also, area Church Youth Groups have been cleaning trash from the trail.
In case of light rain, the event will still be held; just bring your umbrellas and rain gear. In case of heavy rain, raffle tickets and refreshments will be available in the large pavilion near the stage at Mill Race Park. Come out and join the fun!
