Fisher, W.Va. – Over 100 agricultural enthusiasts and professionals gathered at the Misty Mountain Event Barn for the highly anticipated Cattlemen’s Evening, hosted by Eastern WVCTC Agriculture Innovation in collaboration with Mountainview Veterinary Services. The event, which ran from 5:30 to 8 pm, provided an insightful exploration into critical aspects of the industry and featured distinguished speakers from the agriculture industry.
Among the highlights of the evening was the compelling presentation by speaker Michele Payn, who addressed the pressing issue of stress management within the agriculture industry. With her expertise and engaging delivery, Payn offered invaluable strategies and insights on navigating the challenges and pressures inherent in agricultural work.
Duane Bishoff, Livestock Services Supervisor for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of Payn’s message, stating, “I hope and pray that folks in that meeting on March 6 paid attention… Don’t be too proud to admit that stress will wear you down. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help.” Ms. Payn’s presentation would not be possible without the wavering support of the Farm Credit Charitable Contributions Fund. The award to Eastern is to help support agriculture businesses reduce stress and be mindful of their mental health care.
In addition to Michele Payn’s impactful session, attendees heard from Corbitt Wall of National Beef Wire presenting the ‘Packer’s Playbook,’ offering a comprehensive look into the dynamics of the beef industry.
Dr. Megan Webb, Dean of Advancement & Innovation at Eastern WVCTC, reflected on the event’s significance, noting, “Agricultural sustainability isn’t just about land stewardship, but taking care of the stewards of the land.” The success of the Cattlemen’s Evening was made possible through the generous support of partners and sponsors including Farm Credit, Boehringer Ingelheim, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, WVU Extension, WVU Farms, and the WV Beef Council and Cattlemen’s Association. Additionally, the organizers extend heartfelt gratitude to Meadowbrook Farm BBQ for providing a delicious dinner halfway through the event, fostering networking and camaraderie among attendees. “As a young farmer, it’s great to see so many producers and organizations within the state come together for a great evening,” said Sloan Williams, AGEE PHP Coordinator at Eastern, “The future of Agriculture is bright.”
With an enlightening program and a shared commitment to the well-being of agricultural professionals, the Cattlemen’s Evening served as a testament to the strength and resilience of West Virginia organizations working together to support farming sustainability.
