Looking for something creative for your sixth – ninth grader this summer? Have children visiting? Need something special? A theater workshop for middle- and high-school aged kids will be held in Thomas on Monday – Friday evenings, July 25 – 29 and August 1 – 5 at the Thomas Education Center. This program is offered by Voices From The Earth’s Community Theater Ensemble, based in Thomas.
Two theater professionals, Ilene Evans and Kerry Robinson will lead the workshops. . Evans makes her living writing and presenting stories of real, historical figures. She is also a professional storyteller, and conducts workshops on character and story development. Robinson studied theater at St. Mary’s College of Maryand, worked professionally as a theater technician in New York City and Washington, D.C., and later helped establish The Newtowne Players, a community theater in southern Maryland that he left after ten years of service (to move to Thomas) which included directing, producing, designing, and performing.
Evening classes will meet from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. during the last week of July and first week of August, focusing on acting and the technical jobs needed to put on a successful play. A short production will be presented at the end of the two weeks. Students may attend either single week, or both weeks. If attending only one week, it is important to make contact with Kerry before July 25.
High school students are invited to work as interns during the workshop period. These hours may be applied to the community service requirements for graduation. Duties (in addition to learning stage and rehearsal skills) may include publicity, props management, costuming, stage management or stage crew.
A fee of $25 per week will be collected at the beginning of the workshop. If attending both weeks, the fee will be $40. High school interns will not have to pay the participant fee. If you need assistance with fees, inquire about scholarship opportunities.
To register or get more information, contact Kerry Robinson at 304-463-4537, or email kinkerry1@gmail.com.
