Lady Mt. Lions split games at Keyser Holiday Tournament

KEYSER – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Keyser to play a first round game against Fairmont Senior in the Annual Lady Tornado Holiday Tournament on Monday December 28th. The Lady Mt. Lions could not overcome the #2 rated “AA” Fairmont Senior Lady Polar Bears and fell in the contest 56-37.

Tucker County stayed close in the first quarter as Fairmont Senior held a 13-9 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter the Lady Polar Bears pulled away from Tucker County as they outshot the Lady Mt. Lions 16-6 in the second to make the halftime 29-15.

Fairmont Senior increased their lead in the third quarter as they outscored Tucker County 14-9 in the third to put the Lady Polar Bears up 43-24 after three. The Lady Mt. Lions fought back late in the fourth as Tucker County cut the lead to 10 points with 1:40 left in the contest. Fairmont Senior made their foul shots down the stretch and the Lady Mt. Lions could not get any closer as they fell in the contest 56-37.

Sydney Nestor led the way for Tucker County with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Elizabeth Nichols added 5 points and 9 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions in the loss.

KEYSER – The Lady Mt. Lions Basketball team battled “AAA” Spring Mills in the Lady Tornado Holiday Tournament Consolation game on Tuesday December 29th at Keyser High School. Tucker County picked up the hard fought win by the final score of 41-36.

Tucker County jumped out to an early lead to take a 9-2 advantage after one quarter. The Lady Mt. Lions outscored Spring Mills 14-11 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 23-13 at the half.

The third quarter also belonged to Tucker County as they had a 31-22 lead after three. Spring Mills fought back in the fourth quarter as they cut into the Lady Mt. Lions lead. Spring Mills outpaced Tucker County 14-10 in the final quarter, but Tucker County held on for the 41-36 win at Keyser.

Sydney Nestor led all scorers with 24 points and she also pulled down 8 rebounds. Elizabeth Nichols added 5 points and 5 rebounds for Tucker County in the win.

The Lady Mt. Lions(6-2) will return to action at home on January 8th for a varsity only contest against Notre Dame. Game time will be 5:45pm with the Boys’ varsity game to follow.
