St. George Days will be held Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. These two days are set aside to remember the town’s history. St. George is the oldest settlement in Tucker County. At one time it was the home of the Tucker County Court House and it had the first newspaper. The town had stores, hotels, blacksmith, lawyer offices and some saloons. It was a very prosperous town.
The older generations have all passed on but in their memory the residents of St. George still celebrate the town’s rich history. The community is fortunate to still have the St. George Academy that was built around 1885. It was the first school of higher education in the county. The St. George United Methodist Church, known in early history as the Anna Eliza church, built around 1850 is still standing and in good shape. It still has preaching services every Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
The United Methodist Women is the church work hard to keep the church in good condition. The St. George Days Festival is a time to have the annual fund raiser for church upkeep and continued mission projects.
The St. George United Methodist Church will serve its annual hotdog with sauce plate lunches, baked goods and drinks. there will be a cakewalk at 6 p.m. and a silent auction all day Saturday, June 25. There will be yard sales at homes and a free yard sale at the church at 10 a.m.
The town’s history will be on display for the public to look at and read at the church. The St. George Academy will also be open for viewing.
Anyone wanting to set up a yard sale or booth is welcome.
The weekend will finish with church services on Sunday at 10 a.m. with a covered dish meal at 1 p.m. and a community sing at 2 p.m. Proceeds go to the United Methodist Church.
