The Annual Tucker County Regional Health Fair to be held Saturday, June 6 at Canaan Valley the Bear Paw Ski Lodge promises a wide variety of free and low cost health screenings and education to help people take control of their health. The event time is from 7 a.m..— noon.
“This is an opportunity for people to come out and enjoy the spring weather and have fun, while at the same time taking steps to get healthy,” said Tag Stiles, Tucker County Regional Health Fair Coordinator. “Although pre—registration is available for some of the screenings ALL WALK-INS are welcome.
“I encourage everyone who wants to learn more about their health status to participate in the health fair,” Stiles said. “This is a fun and informative event for all ages.
The Multiphasic Blood Analysis, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Screening, and Thyroid Screening are the only tests for which there are a minimal charge. These screening cost $10 each. The Multiphasic Blood Analysis tests for a range of disorders such as high cholesterol, diabetes and cancer; the Prostate Specific Antigen test can show evidence of prostate cancer or an enlarged or inflamed prostate in men; and the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test can indicate an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) or an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism).
For those participating in the Multiphasic screening, a 12 hour fast is required. Fasting is not necessary for the PSA or TSH screenings. The Multiphasic, PSA, and TSH are offered by staff from Mon. General Hospital in Morgantown.
Mon. General will also have exhibits at the health fair on how to prevent heart disease, strokes, and diabetes. We are so excited to bring to your area the American Heart Association’s WATCH-LEARN-LIVE SERIES, this series is dedicated to decreasing heart disease, stroke and diabetes in West Virginia. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually. Every year about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack.
At the Health Fair we will be offering many interactive education stations. The stations will offer tips for healthy living, along with heart attack, stroke risk assessments, and diabetes risk assessments.
Mon. General is the only hospital in North Central West Virginia that is a Certified Chest Pain Center. The hospital’s Chest Pain Center will be distributing information about heart attacks and early heart attack care.
Free screenings include Pulmonary Function Assessments, Bone Density Testing, Cancer Screenings, Blood Pressures screening by Mountain Hospice & Tucker County EMS, Mark Johnson, MD of Morgantown Surgical Associates will be available to answer questions at the “Talk to Your Doc.” exhibit.
In addition, Tucker County Health Fair will be offering Preston Memorial Sleep Lab & Smoking Cessation, Tucker County Health Dept. Lower extremity venous duplex—walk-in, Optomotrist-Dr. Hunt, Mon. General Surgical Unit, Mountain State Dermatology, Pediatric Pulmonologist-Dr. Sotomayor M.D., Rehab. & Fitness Center at Cortland, Davis/Thomas Lions Eye Check, Q&A Associates with information on how to exercise your brain, Tucker County Senior Center, Coordinating Council for Independent Living, NextEra Energy Resources, North Central Community Action programs, Many Faces at Cortland which includes Tele-Health and Much More, Information Booth 1&2 Mon. General Hospital, Mon. Gen. Free mammogram program, Pick up your order for a free mammogram along with the mammogram flyer, Dr. Mark Johnson will write the orders.
In addition, the Tucker County Health Fair will also be offering EKG’s, ultrasounds of gall bladder (requires 8 hour fast), ultrasounds of the aorta, ultrasounds of the carotid. These screenings required pre-registration, which is now closed since all available times have been filled.
The Health Fair is supported in part by the “Hit It Fore Your Good Health” Golf Tournament at Canaan Valley Golf Course. The tournament is held Sunday June 7, with a 9 a.m. Tee-Off. Cost is $75 per golfer or $300 per team. For more information or to register, call (304) 598-1337.
