This is a tintype photo, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype photo. The man is identified as John R. Laman (Lahman). The photo of the woman was with the man, and I am guessing that it is his wife. John (1796-1872) was married to Mary Detrick (1812-1894). She was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Sites Detrick.
