PARSONS – Jonathan Hicks gave a presentation on the state of each of the facilities owned by Tucker County BOE during Monday’s regular meeting held at TVEMS. Hicks talked about the damage to Tucker County High School when the roof was blown of the auditorium a few weeks ago.

“I was able to get Tri State Roofing up there for a temporary repair the next day,” Hicks said. “We are working through the insurance adjuster. There was minimal damage but we do have some warped boards on the stage and some items belonging to the drama department that were damaged. Tri State is looking toward replacing the entire roof.”
Hicks said the BOE needed to start looking at getting the pre-k out of the board office building.

“I know that’s a sore spot with people but I also see where we are at budget wise and costs are making it more and more impossible to stay at that building,” Hicks said. “I just wanted to plant that seed as we go through the budget, keep that in mind. Utilities alone are more than $100,000 in the BOE building alone.”

BOE members thanked Student Representative Karsyn White for her input to the Tucker County BOE. They wished her well in her future endeavors.

“There are very few counties in the state that have student representation on their board,” Superintendent Dr. Eddie Campbell said. “I think you are a role model for the rest of the counties in the state in what can be accomplished. You have been an active participant, attending all the meetings. I have been impressed by and truly appreciate with the things you have brought to the BOE.”

Also during Monday’s meeting Tucker BOE members had an open hearing about the nonrenewal of a probationary service contract. DTEMS custodian Sharon Redmond appeared with her representative Joe Spradling, attorney with the West Virginia Service Personnel Association.

The BOE heard remarks from Redmond and Spradling and other employees. Following remarks, BOE members voted unanimously to not renew Redmond’s probationary service contract.

BOE members voted to accept resignations from Melinda Mauzy, math teacher at DTEMS effective the end of this school year; Amber Kyle, head cheer coach at TCHS effective immediately; Jim Ambrose, head girls basketball coach at TCHS effective immediately; David Helmick, head boys basketball coach at TCHS effective immediately; and Mike Betler, boys basketball coach at TVEMS effective immediately. BOE members voted to approve transfers for Susan Heckler, academic coach at TVEMS to DTEMS 4th grade classroom teacher and Jacqueline Roy, title I coordinator and elementary ed teacher at DTEMS to sixth grade at TVEMS.
The publication of the proposed 2017-2018 budget for public inspection was approved.
The next Tucker County BOE meeting is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. June 5 at the Tucker County Board of Education Office.
