Allen Hayes Loughry I, 83, of Hambleton, WV passed away on February 13, 2021 after a prolonged medical condition. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Allen managed his illness with profound grace and remarkable strength and was fortunate to spend his last year at home with his wife. He was under the care of Mountain Hospice.
He was a kind, supportive and loyal husband to his wife of 58 years, Linda Hovatter Loughry, as well as a loving father to their daughters Kim Hamrick (Travis), Lisa Loughry, and son Allen Loughry II (Kelly). Aside from being survived by his wife and children, Allen also leaves behind his five grandchildren, Kayla Fedonick (Chris), Samantha Peters (Eli), Stephanie Betler, Scotty Elwood (Liz) and Justus Loughry and one great-granddaughter Lena Fedonick. He is also survived by two sisters, Grace Stevens and Wanda Fike.
Allen was a proud Tucker County resident and a staple of the community, retiring in 2000 after serving 12 years as the Tucker County Assessor, preceded by owning and operating the Parsons News & Novelty, where he brought the idea of “family” back into a small-town business, as each of his children worked alongside him, learning invaluable life skills while spending quality time with family and community. He was also a proud co-owner of A & A Construction Company along with other entrepreneurships including owning and operating the Sunset Inn Club & Motel. Allen was also honored to serve in the United States Air Force.
Serving as a trustee for the St. Johns United Methodist Church, Allen was unwavering in his faith. Additionally, he was a prior winner of the Distinguished West Virginian Award, a recipient of the WV Democrat of the Year Award (Tucker County) and served on the Board of Governors for Eastern WV Community and Technical College.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nellie and Thomas Loughry, his sister Annabelle, his mother-in-law Mary Hovatter and father-in-law Scott Hovatter and his nephew Scotty Hovatter.
A Graveside service was held on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at 12:00 Noon at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV. The Reverend Neil Parsons officiated and interment followed.
