Bernice G. Ketterman Hymes

Bernice G. Ketterman Hymes, 83, a resident of Parsons, passed from this life Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.

Bernice was born Friday, December 11, 1936 in Hendricks, a daughter of the late Charles Austin Ketterman and Annie Odell White Ketterman.  On December 25, 1954, she was married to Charles D. Hymes, Sr. who preceded in death during 2002.

Left to cherish Bernice’s memory are two children, Charles D. “Chuck” Hymes, Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Tammy Gayle Hymes-Kelly of Niveah, PA, eight grandchildren, Amanda Stevens, Ashley Hoggard and husband, Tony, Brent Andrew Hymes and fiancé, Sarah, Alex Stevens and fiancé, Stephanie, Joseph David Vulcano and wife, Jessica, Matthew Nathaniel Vulcano, Michael Brandon Vulcano, and Jesse Lee Vulcano, ten great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Hope Hymes Mitchell and husband, Bud, and several nieces and nephews.

Bernice was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by six siblings, James Ketterman, Mary Edith McCrum, Hallie Lee Sturms, Betty Jo Carr, Wilson Paul ”Buck” Ketterman, and Charles Albert “Pete” Ketterman, Sr. and her companion, Robert “Bob” Poling.

Bernice was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1954.  She had worked as a clerk with United States Postal Service in Hendricks and Hambleton.  After moving to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, she was a long-time employee of Ace Hardware until her retirement.  She had also worked at Kellogg’s Supply and Tucker County Extension Office.  She enjoyed helping with the Tucker County Veterans Association, sang with the Goldenaires Choir, and was a member of the Parsons High School Alumni Association.  She had been a member of the Hendricks Pentecostal Church and had attended Riverview Chapel.  She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Bernice’s request for cremation will be honored.  She will be interred in Manteo, NC, next to her husband, Charles.  Memorial Contributions to TC Veterans Assoc., P.O. Box 95, Parsons, WV 26287, or Hendricks Pentecostal Church.  The Hostetler Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Bernice G.
